It's our 100th post here at the Pimp Stitch Blog and what a way to celebrate it! The incredible Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching is our Guest Artist for this month!! I know how excited you must be, and we are too!
Jenny Hart is the founder and creative director of Texas-based embroidery design company, Sublime Stitching -the first company to bring tattoos, pinups and rock 'n roll design to embroidery patterns. Hart is an internationally published artist and illustrator, an award-winning author of multiple titles for Chronicle Books and a founding member of the Austin Craft Mafia. Jenny's embroidery work has been published throughout the world in books, magazines and on television. Her company has been long recognized as a model business in the DIY movement by first introducing new aesthetics, resources and education for embroidery.
Despite a hectic schedule and lots of travel, Jenny lives and works in Austin, Texas, where she runs Sublime Stitching full blast with the help from a wonderful group of people.
1: What do you do when you're not (doing your day job)?
Usually sleeping, reading, petting my cat, doing laundry, pretending to know how to garden, wasting time on the Internets, watching loads of bad tv. Embroidering, drawing, making stuff. Collecting senseless, pretty keepsakes. Obsessing elsewhere. Stuff like that.
2: What inspires you?
That's always such a difficult question to answer! I don't always know what inspires me. And, inspiration can be such an elusive thing. Reading and being able to think quietly is mostly when I tend to find inspiration, or in the opposite regard- when I'm busily doing work that leads on to other ideas to develop and build on, which always leads to run away thinking and undisciplined creativity. At least, for me.
3: When you were 6, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I've always wanted to be an artist, honest and truly.
4: What do you want to be when you grow up now?
(I love these questions) Still, an artist. And we'll say a long-established businessperson and entrepreneur as well. Can I be both?
5: What's your favorite song?
Right now, it's (bear with me here) Poulenc's Deux Novellettes: I in C Major. I usually want to listen to it at least five times a day which is probably too much.
6: And what's one weird habit you have?
If I have to pick just one, I guess I'll tell you about my tendency to pace around my house in bursts while thinking / working.
7: Where are you on an average Tuesday night at 9pm?
Either shuttering up the house for the night, or at a movie.
8: What's your greatest phobia?
Sitting on a needle that's been lost in my gushy couch. I'm usually very, very strict with myself about where I set my needle when not using it.

Jenny has some exciting stuff on the horizon. She'll be in NYC 12/12 to co-teach a class with Cyndi Lee of OM Yoga Manhattan. Also on 12/13 at the BUST Craftacular!
She'll have three new kits coming out with Chronicle Books in Spring '09 and a new book, Inspired Embroidery, in Fall '09.
She always has new transfers coming out and she's particularly excited about the new artists she has contributing to the Sublime Stitching Artist Series starting in spring.
We have some very sad new to report here at Pimp Stitch. Our friend a colleague Missy Ballance is stepping down as a full-time designer.
From Missy:
"PS has become a wonderful huge thing that is so chalk full of information and cuteness. It turned into something bigger than I could have ever imagined, and I'm sure there is lots more to come in the future. I have loved being a part of the start of the wonderful thing, but due to time constraints and my inability to fit it all in, I'm resigning from the group. The other girls have done such a wonderful job so far and even though I can't participate anymore, I will be watching from the sidelines and cheering these girls on as the forge further into the stitching world....maybe even making a guest apperance here and there with a free pattern or tutorial."
Missy's patterns will be available on Pimp Stitch until October 21st. After that, you can contact Missy through her website for pattern availability.
Of course, you will still be able to find Missy's patterns in Pimp Stitch kits and our new pattern booklet that will be available at shows this winter and perhaps our etsy shop in the future.
We are extremely sad to see Missy go, she was part of the birthing of the site and a lot of the inspiration behind it...not to mention she named it! We love you Missy!!!
Missy Ballance is taking us up waaay North this week...all the way up to the tip top of the world, The North Pole. There she introduces us to a pair we are all very familiar with, The Claus'. Mr. Claus in his tradmark suit, looking very friendly.
Mrs. Claus has been busy in the kitchen, warming the house in the chilly North Pole with the smell of Christmas Cookies. Yummy!

Our first Guest Artist is the incredible Kristen Rask of Plush You! and Schmancy Toys. She granted us a Pimpalicious interview and even supplied you guys with a free pattern she designed.
Kristen Rask owns a shop called Schmancy which she opened in 2004. She runs the daily life of Schmancy, runs a blog called Plush You which features plush artists and talks about the show she does once a year called Plush You. Last year she came out with a book called Plush You: Loveable Misfits to sew and stuff. This year Plush You will be at Schmancy (Seattle) October 10th and
Double Punch Gallery (San Francisco) November 7th. She is also working on 2 books at the same time because I am crazy.
She just teamed up with the Bizarre Bazaar folks to bring you "You Bazaar" on Nov. 2nd. You Bazaar will feature 30 vendors of the plush type as well as other crafty friends. They will also have rotating workshops with some plush artists such as Heidi Kenney and Moxie.
Kristen is trying to make things and do craft shows when she can. She would like to have a social life as well which seems to be less and less these days. She tried to start a ping pong league this summer but it hasn't really worked out the way she wanted it to. She'll keep trying.
Here's Kristen's answers to our famous Pimp Stitch Interview questions...
1: What do you do when you're not (doing your day job)?
I like to go out to dinner, see my friends, meet for coffee (i do live
in Seattle after all), make craft things, watch movies, read books and
I really like ping pong.
2: What inspires you?
Oh man. A lot. My friends, my family, my environment, the crazy
crack heads I see every day. Art, flickr, etsy, craft magazine, the
water, vacations, memories, children, blogs, movies, old photographs,
the grocery store, trash. I can get over stimulated a lot.
3: When you were 6, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I don't really remember but at some childhood points I wanted to be a
vet, a nurse, an Olympic skater (i really thought I had that one in
the bag), a crafter, maybe a librarian.
4: What do you want to be when you grow up now?
If I could muster up the courage I might like to go back to school to
become a librarian. I also think it would be awesome to make stuff
all the time. I guess I have one of my dream jobs...I just want to do
more of my dream jobs in my lifetime. BUT for now I am happy doing
what I do.
5: What's your favorite song?
I don't really have a favorite song. That is the hardest question.
And it would depend on the hour. I guess one of my all time favorites
would be I Found a Reason by Velvet Underground.
6: And what's one wierd habit you have?
When I do a craft show I make this crazy obsessive list of what I want
to make and how many. Then I make a calendar and write how many
pieces I need to make a day to reach my goal. And I LOVE to cross
things off the list, rewrite the list and whatnot. It's weird.
7: Where are you on an average Tuesday night at 9pm?
Most Tuesdays at 9pm you can find me at my apartment slightly
intoxicated by then with my friend Pamela. We try to have craft
nights every Tuesday. Crafting with cocktails is awesome. I think
Amy Sedaris and I would be great friends :)
8: What's your greatest phobia?
I am claustrophobic a bit. I really hate crowds of people. It makes
me anxious.
You Bazaar is still taking applications until August 15th. It is going to be super fun so don't delay!
Plush You is a show you don't want to miss so if you are on the west coast mark those calendars so you can
try to make it to one.
She'll also be at the Henry Art Museum on August 9th for a craft day.

July 29th is a big day here at Pimp Stitch. The free patterns will be expiring and each of us will consolidate our 6 existing patterns collections plus our individual free patterns into our "Summer '08" Bundles. At that point the patterns will no longer be available for individual purchase.
But Starting in August, we'll be releasing new individual $3.00 pattern collections again for fall.
Also in August we'll be featuring guest artist Kristen Rask of Schmancy Toys. We'll be interviewing her and giving you a free pattern designed by her.

We have a brand new pattern release today, this time by the lovely Lauren!
Lauren's brand new patterns include the Our Town Collection, complete with an adorable little clothes-line and smoke pipin' out of the chimney. This pattern collection would make a super-cute embellishment for a throw pillow — or a wall hanging, perhaps?
Lauren's Three Friends Pattern Collection is also debuting today! Who can resist a doggie that speaks French (Oui! Oui!) or a monkey in a backwards baseball cap? These adorable little friends come with accessories to boot so you can mix and match.
