My review
rating: 5 of 5 starsIf you are new to sewing clothing than Sew Subversive is a great place to start. The book starts off with hand-sewing basics: the different stitches, mending, sewing a button back on, patching things up, and hemming. Next the book goes over machine sewing - how to use your machine, finding the right machine for you, the different machine stitches, etc. Next the book covers supplies you'll need, fabric choices and notions.
Finally, it's project time!
The very first project teaches you how to create a pillow cover. If you are a medium to skilled sewer than you might want to skip over that part. But if you are learning to sew for the first time, you might want to pay attention! There are several other tips and tricks throughout the book - tips for rouching and how to create embellishments like fabric flowers and ruffles. There's even a few projects on sweater deconstruction.
I also found the instructions to be simple and easy to understand. The diagrams were pretty helpful as well. And unlike some of the other books for beginners, this book has a hip and alternative look and feel that both teens and 30-something hipsters would enjoy. I loved the fact that they recycled materials (you'll find mostly de-constructed clothing projects in this book), plus there are tons of great photos.
My favorite projects: tote from a tee, the pillow tank dress, vintage necktie cuffs and collars, and the all ears - or horns - hoodie.
