Hey everyone, it's Amy here again with another crafty book review!
Sew Everything Workshop by Diana Rupp
This is an excellent book for a beginning seamstress. The book begins with a little info about the author, Dianna Rupp, followed by some info on how to start your own sewing circle, and then 10 reasons why the author likes to sew. It's a nice intro to the book which then continues onto subjects like preparing your work space and what supplies you'll want to add to your personal sewing basket, and how to go about purchasing a sewing machine.
If you've lost the manual to your sewing machine, you're in luck because Diana goes over that too - and her explanations and diagrams are probably easier to understand then your manual anyway.
She starts at the very beginning - meaning practicing and trouble shooting (how to tell if your tension is off, etc.) Next, Diana has a whole chapter on fabrics (a.k.a. how to choose the right fabric for your project), a bit about notions, and then she goes into layout and cutting (how to measure, use patterns, etc.).
After all that, you still get a slew of projects to make! There are quite a few clothing projects, if that is your thing. My favs are the Easy Breezy Wrap Skirt, the Flouncy Tank Top, and the Lucky Scrap Scarf. For those of you who aren't interested in sewing wearables, there are projects for pillows, pin-cushions, a sewing machine cozy, an elephant stuffie, and even sewn cards.
There's even a chapter on hand-sewing! Diana tells you how to do all the practical things like sewing on a button or hemming pants.
There's even a hefty glossary and index to help you find your way. Oh, and the book comes with a big envelope full of patterns too.
If you already know how to sew and are in the medium to advanced range, then this book is probably not for you. However, if you are a sewing newbie brimming with questions, then you are in the right place. Owning the Sew Everything Workshop book is like having your own personal sewing instructor!

It's kind of better than having your own personal sewing instructor. I just bought the book (and my first machine) and it has been way more informative than the instructor I had this summer (ok, she wasn't a personal instructor, but there were only four people in a six week class, and I still learning very little). I heart this book the most, it is making me obsessed with my sewing machine.
